A Prize Full of Life
THE AWARD CEREMONY
For the past thirty four years, on the third Saturday of November, culture has been exalted at San Polo di Piave.
The Parco Gambrinus restaurant becomes a theatre which welcomes political and institutional guests, exponents of the worlds of literature, science, economy, journalism and communication, as well as an audience of scholars and enthusiasts from all over Europe.
This year the prize-giving ceremony will start at 4.30 p.m. to award the winners of the three competing sections and the promising young writers of the Premio Juniores.
There will certainly be some surprises. Many events and anecdotes have been linked to the Prize in its thirty four editions. Like the anonymous writer of a wonderful, extremely important book, who, it was discovered thirty years later, turned out to be a scientist from the former Soviet Union who managed to finally escape to Israel…
But this is part of the history of the Prize, the present will be celebrated at Parco Gambrinus on 18 November 2017.
THE PRIZE CONTINUES
Conferences, meetings, exhibitions, projections, presentations and special initiatives.
The “Premio Letterario Giuseppe Mazzotti” Association organises many events throughout the year. It is one way of contributing personally to disseminating and keeping alive the interests that stimulated Giuseppe Mazzotti, by seeking to emulate his commitment and dedication to his life’s work.
An everyday commitment in the local territory which also extends to Ecuador, with Operation Otonga, and Kenya with Operation Got Owaga, thanks to the projects promoted and financed by Bioforest.
Culture is a living thing to be read, communicated, experienced, defended and enhanced.
This is the spirit that fires the Gambrinus “Giuseppe Mazzotti” Prize.
A prize created to honour the memory of a man who dedicated his whole life to a search for the thrill of knowledge and its dissemination.
To love the land of one’s roots; its past, present and future.
To defend and enhance its heritage of history, art, culture, food and wine and people.
To care for the environment and landscape and protect them.
To desire knowledge and be prepared to explore the world from a new perspective and through the eyes of others.
It is with this spirit that the “Premio Letterario Giuseppe Mazzotti” Association undertakes to select and give visibility to the works of authors who have distinguished themselves in the areas included in the Prize sections. A further commitment is to carry forward Mazzotti’s work through awareness initiatives and active participation in safeguarding and nurturing the subjects he held dear.
Adriano Zanotto, Ugo Fabbris, Tino Ceriana, Giovanni Vicentini, Anna Mazzotti Pugliese, Franco Pugliese, Cino Boccazzi, Sandro Meccoli, Toni Benetton. All friends and companions who shared the life, views and adventures of Giuseppe Mazzotti.
Theirs was the idea to create a Prize which would keep alive Mazzotti’s memory and disseminate his works and spirit. In 1983, just two years after his death, the first edition of the GAMBRINUS “GIUSEPPE MAZZOTTI” LITERARY PRIZE FOR BOOKS ON MOUNTAINEERING, EXPLORATION AND ECOLOGY was held.
The Prize has grown over the years, attracting a wider audience and the interest of authorities and institutions such as the San Polo di Piave Municipality, the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) and Touring Club Italiano, as well as involving local businesses and increasing the scope of the prize.
During the 9th edition (1986) an “Honoris Causa” acknowledgement was set up to be assigned on random occasions to an individual, the complete works of a celebrity, or a public or private institution or body that have achieved distinction in the subjects to which the Prize is dedicated.
For the award ceremony of the 12th edition in 1994 Adriano Zanotto, chef of the Parco Gambrinus Restaurant, created the “Gambero d’Oro”, an accolade to occasionally pay homage to important members of the food and wine trade or winners of the Prize.
In 2005 a Readers’ Panel was set up to award a “super prize” to the book the 40 readers on the Panel most enjoyed from those selected by the jury as winners in the different categories.
On the occasion of the 27th edition in 2009 some important changes were made to the prize regulations with the final definition of the six sections.
Today the story continues thanks to the constant commitment of the “Premio Letterario Giuseppe Mazzotti” Association, which over the years has never tired of keeping alive the spirit of the event and its parallel activities.
Because the prize is not just the award ceremony day; its aim is to be a cultural point of reference in the territory, extending its programme throughout the year with interesting events. Following in the footsteps of Mazzotti, or rather walking by his side.
