His many interests and extraordinary personality made Giuseppe Mazzotti a true ‘Renaissance man’. He was passionate about art, mountaineering, literature, landscape, photography, food and wine, and civil commitment – all linked to his love for the Veneto land and culture and his own city. The aim of the literary prize in his name is to ensure continuity of his cultural heritage and commitment, by reflecting the variety of subjects he took an interest in.
Since its XXVII edition in 2009, the Prize has been divided into six sections split into two groups considered in alternating years.
SECTION I: Mountains: Culture and Civilisation / Exploration – Travel / Window on the Triveneto Region
SECTION II: Mountaineering / Ecology and Landscape / Traditional Arts and Crafts

MOUNTAINS: CULTURE AND CIVILISATION
“The few who go into the mountains seeking places where life still unfolds in primitive harmony with all things cannot bear the lack of understanding that rises from the plain to bury the mountains” (La montagna presa in giro, 1935)
Not just a mountaineer fascinated by scaling peaks and mountain sides, but enamoured of all aspects of the mountains, Giuseppe Mazzotti has left us some fantastic books that tell the stories of valleys and their communities; of art, trades and traditions; of mountain people, climbers, guides and inhabitants of the valleys. A world to be treated with respect and safeguarded from attacks on its environment and civilisation. This section is dedicated to works that narrate and study the mountains and their cultural and human heritage.

EXPLORATION – TRAVEL
“…the more knowledge [he] acquired of the places, the more obvious it became that [he] he still had many other things to learn.” (Feltre, 1973)
On the national council of the Italian Touring Club and Director of the Treviso Tourist Authority, Giuseppe Mazzotti was an untiring traveller, prompted by his curiosity to see places of beauty and hidden treasures, forgotten, neglected or unknown to most people. He wrote articles, essays and guides and published photographs to promote slow, observant travelling, the value of which we are now re-discovering. This section gathers literature that tells of journeys and travellers who share his philosophy.

WINDOW ON THE TRIVENETO REGION
“”Not only are the Venetian villas set into the landscape, they are a part of it, almost like natural forms typical of the place where they stand.” (Le Ville Venete, 1953)
Writer, freelance journalist, essayist, exhibition curator and art critic, himself an artist, Giuseppe Mazzotti studied and researched the Veneto culture and wrote indefatigably about it. He expended energy and dedication to safeguarding its historic, artistic and environmental heritage, Venetian villas first and foremost. This section awards a prize to works that follow in Mazzotti’s footsteps by narrating Veneto’s territorial and ecological culture.

MOUNTAINEERING
“They now look again at the top of the tower, which continues to move above them towards the white of the cloud. No-one has ever been up there.” (La grande parete, 1938)
A writer of mountain subjects and expert climber, he made some memorable ascents in the Italian mountains, but also left us beautifully written pages which led him to be known as one of the best writers about mountaineering. Mountains contemplated in their beauty and human beings who perform demanding feats to ascend them are the themes dealt with by the works competing in this section.

ECOLOGY AND LANDSCAPE
“Landscape, yes, but what type of landscape? Urban or natural, or that which has been transformed over time by human labour? I would say the landscape in which we live.” (La difesa del paesaggio italiano, 1968)
Giuseppe Mazzotti was a ahead of his time in considering the landscape a result of a close relationship betweeen the natural environment and human labour; a relationship that over time produces special, unique architecture, deeds, knowledge and culture. His untiring commitment to safeguarding the landscape and environment are the source of inspiration for the works in this section.

TRADITIONAL ARTS AND CRAFTS
“In Veneto artisan production is entrusted to the inventive flair of countless craftsmen and women, whose skilled hands can change any material into a work of art; marble, semi-precious stones, gold, iron, copper, bronze.” (Artigianato veneto, 1971)
Displaying out of the ordinary, modern cultural sensitivity, Mazzotti was one of the first to acknowledge value and cultural dignity not only for ‘conventional’ works of art, but also for the so-called ‘lesser arts’, artisan artefacts, traditions and folk songs …, to which he dedicated studies, research and exhibitions. This section of the Prize is inspired by the cultural treasure of arts, crafts and traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation.
